Building for a Cause

Another year has come and gone.  However, as one door closes another door opens.  What exactly is behind the new door?  Much has changed or is in the process of changing for the new year.  A charitable giving model is beginning, a new workshop space is in use, and that's only the beginning.

I originally began DS Guitar Engineering as a hobby while I was in college.  I envisioned it as a business that could potentially become my full time job.  While it hasn't been successful enough to fully support me yet, God has blessed me far beyond what I deserve through my other sources of income.  Not too long ago I realized where I was going wrong and as a result I re-envisioned the business model of DSGE.

"In every way I've shown you that by laboring like this, it is necessary to help the weak and to keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus, for He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”  -Acts 20:35

The bible makes it clear that Christians should make giving a regular part of their lifestyle.  Even for those that are not religious, giving instills a feeling of joy that you can't get from anywhere else.  Following this principle, a charitable giving plan has been set in place for 2014 and many years to come.  I am proud to announce that 25% of all gross profits between January 1 and December 14, 2014 will be used to fund a Christmas gift program for underprivileged children.  As business increases the percentage of profit that is donated will also increase.  Further details on this initiative will be explained in a future post.

But wait, there's more!  In addition to the general sales fund, I'm beginning another charity program that will benefit from the sale of a single unique instrument each year.  Here's how it will work:

  1. Each year, from 2014 onward, DSGE will produce an extremely unique instrument that will appeal to musicians, collectors, and artists alike.  Multiple variables could make these guitars unique.  Some examples might include exotic woods, precious metals, special electronics, or perhaps a precise replica of a well-known classic instrument.
  2. These "art guitars" will be put up for auction near the end of the calendar year.
  3. The good stuff: 100% of the profit from the auction will be donated to a charitable cause.

This year's art guitar is already under construction and a charity has already been selected as its beneficiary.  An upcoming post will give you a peek at the progress of the 2014 Art Guitar and give additional details about the cause this unique instrument aims to support.

In other news, the new year also marks a new milestone in the capabilities of the shop.  A new workshop space is now in use and it's more than triple the size of the previous space!  This means more tools, more material stock, more work area, more inventory, and more production potential.  Look for a future post which will detail the expanded capabilities of the shop as well as a possible shop tour!

I'm really excited to see what becomes of the new business model and the lives it impacts as well as sharing new developments throughout the year.  I hope each of you are blessed beyond measure this year and that 2014 is a year you will never forget!
